Competitive exams like INISS-ET and NEET SS challenge candidates not just on the number of correct answers but also penalize incorrect answers, which can significantly impact your overall score. Below, I share strategies based on experience to help you navigate these crucial exams effectively.
1. Assess the Difficulty Level Early
Start by quickly surveying approximately 30-40% of the exam paper. This early assessment helps determine the overall difficulty level—be it easy, moderate, or difficult. Understanding the nature of the questions early on will guide your strategy for the rest of the exam.
2. Categorize Questions
Classify the questions into three categories:
- Sure Answers: Questions you can answer confidently without hesitation.
- Doubtful Questions: Questions where you hesitate or feel torn between two options.
- Uncertain Questions: Questions that are either unclear or cover topics you are familiar with but can’t recall the answer to.
3. Strategic Question Selection
After evaluating your certainty level, decide how many questions to attempt and how many to skip. This decision is crucial in managing risk and maximizing your score.
Strategic Advice Based on Question Difficulty
For Easy to Moderate Questions:
- High Confidence Questions: Aim to answer about 80-85% of the questions with complete certainty.
- Questions with Doubts: Attempt as many as possible, ideally aiming for 90-95% of these. For example, if you’re unsure about 4 questions and decide to attempt them all while skipping another 4, even if 3 out of these 4 attempts are incorrect, the impact on your score will be minimal.
For Difficult Questions:
- High Confidence Questions: Maintain the 80-85% answer rate for questions you know well.
- Questions with Doubts: Only attempt questions if you’re about 70% certain of the answer. In challenging exams, it’s often wiser to skip questions you’re unsure about to avoid the higher risk of negative marking.
Conclusion
Exams like INISS-ET and NEET SS test not only your knowledge but also your exam strategy and time management skills. Each question you answer correctly can significantly improve your rank, but avoiding incorrect answers is equally crucial.
Use these insights to approach your exam with confidence and smart tactics. Best of luck!
